On February 1, 2018, the Junior League of Hampton Roads partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula to help young girls #SpeakBeautiful! The theme for the event was “I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” We were able to impact over 114 individuals in our community with this event!
During the event, girls were broken into four groups based on age ranging from 5-14+. In each breakout session a facilitator conducted a 20-25 minute workshop on the topic of self-esteem and the role media plays.
The Junior League provided two facilitators, Valia Maloney and Marcella Williams. Marcella spoke to the 14+ group on how social media can damage our self-esteem providing an interactive slideshow presentation with real life examples. Valia read “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon”, the story of a little girl who doesn’t let anything, or anyone, shake her belief in herself to the youngest group.
Following each breakout session the girls enjoyed food donated by Buffalo Wild Wings. Each girl received a #SpeakBeautiful bracelet to remind them the importance of being kind to yourself and others. At the end of the night two lucky ladies were the winners of a brand new bike and a razor scooter.
